Are you froze?

Have you had cold weather? Here are some steps to help you if you believe you are frozen.

-          If your well is inside a temperature controlled well house or enclosure (no air gaps or exposure), then you should be fine.

-          If your well house or enclosure is not temperature controlled or poorly insulated, a couple of heat lamps or small space heater are highly recommended, along with wrapping any of the exposed 1” or 1 ¼” PVC or Galvanized piping with some sort of pipe insulation. Please make sure it is not too hot to melt the plastic.

-          If all or part of your well is outside, you will definitely want to wrap any of the 1” or 1 ¼” PVC or Galvanized pipe.  It also  recommended to wrap the pressure tank with a some large blankets and securing them with duct tape.   A roll of attic insulation can also be used for this purpose and can be purchased at any hardware store.

-          If your pipes did freeze, TURN OFF THE BREAKER TO YOUR WATER WELL UNTIL THEY CAN BE THAWED OUT.!!!!  This will prevent the pump from trying to run while the pipes are frozen, which could result in the pump being damaged.

-          If you see water coming out of the Pressure Relief Valve (it’s a brass fitting on top of the well casing where it comes out of the  ground), don’t panic.  Its doing what it is supposed to do.  This means that there is a blockage of ice somewhere in the lines between the pump and pressure tank.  Turn of the breaker until the ice can be cleared to avoid damaging the pump.

-          If possible, leave a few faucets dripping to keep the water moving inside the pipes.

-          Finally, if you will not be home.  Or if you are not currently using your water well.  The best thing to do is turn the breaker off to the well and then open the water hose fitting on the side of the pressure tank to drain the tank.  That way there will be no water in the system to freeze.  When you return, or when temperature rise above freezing, all you have to do is close the water hose fitting and turn the breaker back on.  The tank will fill on its own and return to normal state.

If it has been above freezing for 24 hours and you still do not have water please contact us at any of our contact numbers listed for service.

We appreciate you and hope this will help with unwanted bills, as well as worry.
